The 8th International Symposium on Water Supply Technology was held at the Kobe International Conference Center from June 10 through 12, 2009 with 748 participants from 17 countries. For three days special lectures and discussions were held under the main theme of "New Challenges for Sustainable Drinking Water Service" to explore future directions that waterworks should take. New challenges that waterworks businesses are facing were deliberated: "adaptation to climate change", "emaergency measures", "long-term asset management", "integrated operations and management" and "information disclosure to the public." As a solution to such issues, the importance of international communications and cooperation, in particular, the importance of communications and cooperation among experts and among domestic service suppliers was confirmed. This symposium was also recognized to be one of important opportunities. The latest technologies, immediate issues to be solved and the new direction were presented at the symposium and it was a quite meaningful symposium for the participants. In addition, a total of 56 service suppliers, corporations and organizations presented their latest technologies at exhibitions and approximately 7,900 visitors came during 3 days.
